  Marketing Studio

Marketing Studio enables business managers to personalize products and content for site visitors through an intuitive, wizard-driven interface.

Business managers can:

  • Collect data about site visitors and store it for rapid retrieval and analysis
  • Segment site visitors into meaningful, manageable segments
  • Merchandise products
  • Recommend products and content based on a combination of the context within which content is viewed and the segments to which a visitor belongs.

In addition to the features and functionality you get with Content Server, Content Center and Catalog Center, the following are major features of Marketing Studio.

Wizard-based interface

An intuitive, wizard-based interface enables marketing managers to quickly perform the necessary tasks to segment users, and promote and recommend products and content without having technical expertise or involving IT.

User segmentation by:

  • Any other data a site chooses to collect about visitors

Marketing Studio is pragmatic. Instead of trying to force a system to produce 1:1 (something often so impractical it can lead to no results at all) it makes it possible for business managers to segment customers into meaningful, manageable groups. Business managers retain complete control over the level of granularity of the segment-it can be very broad (twentysomething males) or more specific (twentysomething males from Frankfurt that have purchased 10 CD's within the last month and haven't ever purchased a book).

Promotion creation/management

Using promotion wizards, business managers can easily promote products. These wizards walk a business manager through the steps of defining the effect of the promotion (discounted price, free shipping, etc.), the timing and duration of the promotion, and where it should appear on the site. Promotions can be placed in workflows so that business owners can collaborate on marketing program goals and execution.

Recommendations of product and other content such as:

  • Related articles
  • Product cross-sell

Recommendations allow business managers to create:

  • Affinities between products such as cross-sells and up-sells (i.e. if visitor selects product A suggest product B)
  • Affinities between content such as related articles (i.e if visitor is reading article A, show article B as well)
  • Relationships between products and content (i.e. if visitor is reading article A show products from product group B)

Recommendation weightings can be influenced by a visitors membership in segments as well. For instance, visitors that belong to the "high-value purchaser" segment can be shown "higher-end" products and articles about premium products.

Workflow

Segments, promotions, and recommendations can be workflowed like any product or piece of content. This enables enterprises to input checks-and-balances and facilitate collaboration on marketing projects.

Because business managers can effect site change through the Marketing Studio user interface, the IT staff does not need to be involved in day-to-day changes to the site.

Template Developer

Standards-based development (XML, Java)

Sophisticated actions such as invoking rules, calculating segments, etc. are implemented using XML tags-minimizing the time and expertise needed to develop highly dynamic, personalized sites.

Visitor data management

Template designers can include XML tags that log user information and activities to a visitor data management table. This streamlines the process of gathering, storing, and retrieving user data. Business managers can use the UI to create segments based on this data.

Integrated rules engine (for determining which promotions and recommendations to display)

Because an efficient rules engine is embedded in Marketing Studio, system developers do not need to write rules in order to perform sophisticated personalization. Business managers create rules through the wizard interface and system developers determine where the rules will be implemented.

Analysis Connector for data analysis and reporting (Q1 2001)

The Analysis Connector enables Marketing Studio to be connected to virtually any data analysis or reporting tool. Developers can customize the Analysis Connector to efficiently log data that can be drawn into a third-party analysis tool. Business managers can use this data to determine the effectively of promotions, and to gather data about visitors and customers.
